Wairuakohu update for iwi

May 20, 2025

Ngāti Hinerangi has been part of an iwi collective leading a research project involving a very special taonga found in our ngahere – Wairuakohu.
This free event is to update iwi members on some of the exciting discoveries being made and plans for utilising the mātauranga provided by the plant to protect te taiao and create new economic opportunities that may also help people around the world.
Other iwi include Ngāti Hauā, Te Kawerau-a-Maki and Ngāti Pūkenga.
We will have presentations from researchers and product development experts and discussions about how we tiaki the taonga and te taiao.
We will also be discussing two other research projects that need iwi/kaitiaki reps involved to direct the rangahau and make decisions at each step of the process.
