Wairere Mahi

Wairere Mahi
Wairere Mahi is an environmental restoration team established by Ngāti Hinerangi Iwi, operating in the Matamata region. Their primary focus is on preserving, protecting, and restoring the natural environment within their territory, particularly around the Wairere Falls and the Kaimai Range.
The team’s efforts include targeted pest control over approximately 1,000 hectares between Wairere Falls and State Highway 29, aiming to eradicate possums, rats, and mustelids to restore the mauri (life force) of sacred lands.
They also engage in track and trail restoration and maintenance, collaborating with various partners and community volunteers to promote kaitiakitanga (guardianship) and environmental education.
In addition to environmental work, Wairere Mahi serves as a labour hire crew, employing kaimahi (workers) to provide full-time employment opportunities for iwi members, helping them reconnect with their marae and culture.
Through these initiatives, Wairere Mahi aims to bring meaningful benefits to the iwi and the wider community, ensuring the protection and enhancement of their natural environment for future generations.
We work with a number of partners and collaborators across a wide range of kaupapa taiao.
