Ngāti Hinerangi remember Kaimai air disaster 60 years on

Sep 3, 2023

We had the absolute pleasure in August of conducting the opening mihi whakatau and karakia for a very special remembrance ceremony at the foot of the Kaimai Range.

This year marked the 60th anniversary of our country’s worst domestic air disaster when an Air New Zealand plane smashed into the Kaimai Range. All 23 people on board died that day in 1963.

Whānau of those on board, including the pilot’s wife, turned out today for a very emotional ceremony filled with karakia, poetry and waiata.

E mihi atu nei kia koe matua Peri Mason, one of our TPH trustees, for leading the event today on our behalf.
