Wairere Toi was hoping Matamata College could secure the winning title again this year at the annual Te Wairere Exchange between Māori students at Matamata and Morrinsville College on Friday, 29 September at Morrinsville but to no avail.
This sports and cultural exchange between the two schools dates back more than 20 years and has been the event of the year for Māori students to show off their sporting flair in netball, basketball and debating as well as their passion for kapa haka.
Our Wairere Toi team led the Matamata College kapa to victory in 2022 as the host school but hometown advantage and a stellar performance saw Morrinsville come away the overall champs for 2023.
The principals both spoke of the longstanding camaraderie that has flourished over the years and their appreciation for the event that truly promotes Māori excellence and whānau engagement.
Matamata College will host next year’s event.
